Eliminate Rodents around your Home this Winter

Rockland New York is about to be infested this winter if it hasn’t already. House mice, roof rats, Norway rats, and other types of rodents are looking for a place to winter, and your Rockland home is like Hotel Rodentia. We don’t want you to find a mouse in your stocking or exploring the menora around the holidays.

Rodents carry diseases such as salmonella, leptospirosis, and hantavirus, and contaminate your food. Their fecal matter can cause allergic reactions, they cause damage to walls, food, and documents, and they make noise at night. They aren’t exactly a good choice for a roommate, and they don’t even pay rent!

Below, we’ll tell you the signs of a rodent problem this winter and what to do to rodent-proof your home, and not just mouse traps, but also hardware with tamper-resistance strength and durability.

Rodent Signs

  • Nesting Sites Rodents will use feathers, pillow or cushion stuffing, soft bits of wood, or wall insulation as nesting material.
  • Nightly Noise One common signs of rats and mice is gnawing, scratching, scurrying, or fighting sounds. Rats especially will squeak and fight one another for dominance, food, and territory.
  • Fecal Matter Mouse and rat droppings are also common signs of an infestation. Rat droppings are cylindrical and rounded at the edges, and house mouse droppings are roughly the size and shape of rice grains.
  • Footprints You may find prints near a food source, like a bag of flour or sugar they have chewed through. These signs are less common, but easily a good diagnosis of an infestation.
  • You see One You’re unlikely to spot a rodent in your house, even by accident, because of their naturally cautious nature. But if you see one, it’s time to take action.
  • Pet Behavior Due to their excellent sensory perception, dogs or cats may exhibit alarm or alert behavior or agitation if they detect a furry visitor nearby.

Get Rid of Rodent Attractions

  • Food storage Use airtight containers stored high above the ground for dry goods and especially pet food.
  • Clean the House Clean houses with a regular sanitation plan are less likely to maintain habitation for rodents. Purchase an automatic vacuum and run it at night to reduce activity. Ventilate, maintain, and reduce leakages of pipes and drains to reduce rodent water sources and get rid of mice.
  • Clean the Yard Fallen fruit or vegetables, leaves, or branches are prime attractants. Clear these away. Trim shrubbery and tree branches from the perimeter of the house, especially brush, to reduce access points and harborages.
  • Compost and Firewood Piles: Place firewood and compost piles at least 20 feet from the house on a platform raised at least one foot from the ground. Install metal 1/4 inch gauge screening around them for additional protection.
  • Empty Garbages Never leave the interior garbages full at night. Ensure your outdoor dumpster seals properly and is placed at least 20 feet from your home.

Eradicate Rodents: Entry Points

Seal the following common places rodents enter your home with silicone caulk, copper wire mesh, steel wool, or metal, 1/4 inch gauge screening.

  • Accessible gaps in siding, sill plates and home foundations, window wells, cracks and crevices around doors and ground-level or basement windows
  • Gaps around water, gas, or electrical piping
  • Chimneys, fireplaces, garages, and sheds often pose a problem with large entry points.
  • Trim bushes, vegetation, and other shrubberies at least one foot from the house siding. Keep grass short to reduce harborage locations.

Professional Control and Prevention

Some homeowners employ live traps, glue traps, rodent bait, bait stations, and good old peanut butter mouse traps available for purchase over-the-counter to get rid of rats or mice. Bait and live traps pose a risk to children or pets if not employed professionally. Dispose of dead rodents cautiously, by using proper sanitation techniques: use gloves, seal the dead rodent in a plastic bag, dispose of it in a dumpster and never indoors, thoroughly wash anything it contacts, and thoroughly sanitize the area.

Our Fox Pest Control Technicians are Pest Professionals with the expertise and experience you need for rodent control. Your Pest Pro from Fox Pest Control will work with you to create a rat control or mice control and Home Protection Plan and restore your peace of mind. Pest Control? Think Fox Pest Control.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
