5 Things to Reduce Termite Infestations

1. Proper Firewood and Lumber Storage

Termites eat just about everything and anything made of wood, collectively costing billions for homeowners throughout the United States.

Firewood and lumber storage that leans against your home could be a significant threat to your home, allowing termites passages inside without detection. If you take care of loose wood debris could save you time and money.

Place all lumber and firewood on a raised platform at least 20 feet from your house. The platform should be made of metal and raised at least 1 foot above the ground. Consider placing a plastic tarp or other covering over it as well to protect it from moisture, which could also attract termites to it.

2. Repair Water Damage and Poor Drainage Areas

Many types of termites are attracted to water-damaged wood, so you’ll need to repair and check for leakages inside and outside your house. Check the water pipes and utility cabinets, toilets, shower drains, kitchen and bathroom sinks, and all other water areas inside your home.

Outside your home, any water drainage issues could attract termites, including gutters that are clogged with leaves or twigs. Formosan termites especially will take advantage of a clogged gutter with a little dirt and leaves and start a new colony there.

Downspouts should pour the water away from the home foundation, so consider purchasing water drain pipes if necessary. Make sure all draining water moves away from the house and doesn’t pool anywhere in the yard.

3. Clear Away Plant and Wooden Debris

Any fallen branches, leaves, twigs, or even mulch can attract termites, so clear it away as soon as possible.

If you have mulch near your foundation, keep the mulch thin and rake it at least 1 foot away from the house. Deep mulch could provide ideal conditions for termites and allow them to spread toward the house.

4. Trim Bushes and Tree Branches

Bushes that are too close together or too close to the house pose a serious termite risk, and so do tree branches that touch the house or hang over the roof.

Trim bushes so that they are at least 3-4 feet apart from each other and 1-2 feet away from the house siding. Cut tree branches at least 5 feet from the house and do not overhang above the roof.

Obviously, you’ll always be sure to clear away all trimmings after you’ve finished.

5. Professional Termite Extermination and Prevention

Although these things make your home less enticing to termites, these steps don’t stop termites from invading your home if they’re determined.

Some homeowners try to get rid of termites on their own by using termite killers like boric acid, termite bait systems, and food-grade diatomaceous earth for DIY termite extermination. Often, these homeowners end up wasting time and money and are forced to seek out professional help anyway.

For that reason, we recommend calling the professionals you can rely on to have the tools and experience you need to get rid of and prevent a termite problem.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
