4 Ant Problems this Spring

Ants are a worldwide pest problem that can drive any homeowner crazy. Ants have marched their way onto every continent except Antarctica and they thrive in every climate, including the North Pole.

At best, these pests can be a nuisance for a homeowner. At worst, ants can cause property damage, food contamination, stings, and bites.

Here are four of the most common kinds of ants that might come in or around your home this spring, plus a few things you can do to keep them away.

1. Pavement Ant

As the name implies, the pavement ant is usually found in cracks in the pavement or between rocks. After wandering their way into the house, they are extremely annoying. They are typically just a nuisance since they don’t cause damage and aren’t especially dangerous.

Pavement ants are usually responsive to efforts to get rid of them. The main thing any homeowner should do to get rid of ants of any type is to seal all food, including pet food, in airtight containers. Next, seal common ant entry points by using silicone caulk, door sweeps, or other hardware to fill cracks and crevices around the home, including gaps around utility and A/C unit pipes, gaps around doors and windows, window wells, or cracks around the foundation.

Prevent ants from coming inside by frequent cleaning to keep ants from finding tasty crumbs or convenient hiding spots.

2. Odorous House Ant

With the nasty smell they emit when crushed, these ants are aptly named. Like most ants, they also eat just about anything, from sugary foods to grease or meat.

This type of ants is much more difficult to eradicate because of their thousands of egg-laying queens and their ability to divide into hundreds or thousands of sub-colonies. If even one reproductive queen gets away, the entire colony could restart again.

Since these ants are much less responsive to baits and traps than pavement ants, it’s a good idea to involve the professionals as quickly as possible if you discover them in the house.

3. Crazy Ant

Because of their long legs and the uneven way they walk, these ants also get called crazy because they have the unique ability to leave foraging lines to look for food on their own, an extremely uncommon ability among ants.

Crazy ants also get their name from the insane things they do in the house. With their gigantic colonies and hundreds of egg-laying queens inside the walls, crazy ants crawl over electrical wires, destroying TVs, radios, laptops or desktop computers, and even toasters.

4. Carpenter Ant

Famous for their ability to carve through wood with their huge jaws, carpenter ants are probably the most destructive of all ant species. Even though they don’t eat the wood, carpenter ants could still cause as much structural damage to a home as termites can.

Even though these ants only have one queen, they aren’t any easier to eradicate than other ants. Usually, the main colony stays outside somewhere and sends a satellite colony to invade your home. This sub-colony carves wooden galleries that they fill with eggs and larvae.

To tell the difference between a carpenter ant and other ants, look at the size. Most ants are about 1/8 inch long, but carpenter ants are closer to a half-inch.

Carpenter Ant or Termite?

  • Ants have a thin waist that connects their abdomen with the rest of the body. Termites have a thick waist.
  • Ants have a bend in their antennae. Termite antennae are straight and made up of tiny beads.
  • When they have wings, ants have four wings of two different lengths, and termites have four wings of equal length.
  • Getting Rid of Ants

For many people, their first instinct when faced with a pest infestation is to deal with it on their own. Even though there are plenty of products out there to help you if you want to treat ants yourself, the best option is to call the professionals. Treating on your own can bring mixed results and waste of time and money, and lots of people end up calling a professional anyway.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
